Anyone with an email account knows the frustration of having their inbox flooded with spam emails, and has likely seen messages including pharmaceutical offers, work-at-home scams, and financial offers from Nigerian royalty. In 2009, spam levels reached a record high, with 94% of all emails being considered spam. Today, spam is slightly more under control, but definitely continues to be a problem. According to Symantec’s April MessageLabs Intelligence Report, global spam levels are now at 72.9%, a 6.4% decrease from March 2011 to April 2011.

- 33% of malicious domains blocked in April were new domains
- The most spammed industry was the Automotive industry, at a rate of 76.5%
- Most targeted industry for malware was the Public Sector, with 1 in 26.4 emails being malicious
Geographic trends:
- Oman was the most spammed country, with a rate of 81.9%
- In the United States, 72.8% of email was spam
- In South Africa 1 in 68.1 emails contained malicious content.
